Polyethylene pipes are the material of choice for most gas distribution applications in North America and around the world. In the United States, their use is governed by 49 CFR 192, which outlines the design requirements for plastic piping. In Canada, the operation is regulated under CSA Z662. Polyethylene pipes for gas distribution applications range in diameter from 1” to 24”. Typical pressure capabilities are up to 80 psi for MDPE pipes and up to 125 psi for HDPE pipes. For applications where pressure ratings exceed the operational limits of polyethylene, certain polyamide piping systems have been approved for use in regulated gas distribution applications.
